Seismic trainer “on alert” after waking up from a coma

San Jose Earthquakes announced on Monday that assistant coach Benjamin Galindo has regained consciousness and spoken to family members nearly two weeks after suffering a stroke and placing him in a medically induced coma.

Galindo, 59, is in his second season with the NBA earthquakes. He was put into a coma on May 28 after brain surgery after a stroke. In a tweet on Monday, the team said Galindo was “awake, alert and talking to the family.”

In a statement released on Monday, the team wrote that “Benjamin woke up from his coma that was medically caused on Sunday morning. He became increasingly alert and began talking to family members while he was hospitalized in Guadalajara. We appreciate everyone’s patience and respect for the privacy that the Galindo family demanded.”

Galindo was reported to have suffered a stroke while visiting a family in Guadalajara, Mexico. Earthquakes were two games into the season when MLS suspended operations on March 12 due to COVID-19.

Galindo joined Quakes after an intense and successful career playing and coaching in Mexico where he earned the title El Maestro and was a member of Mexico’s World Cup 1994 squad.

He participated in 65 games with the Mexico national team from 1983-1997, and scored 28 goals for El Tri. Galindo has appeared in more than 700 club matches from 1979-2001, scoring 163 goals. He spent most of his career with Chivas Club (Guadalajara) and Tampico Madero. He made his first coaching as coach of Chivas in 2004, the first two trips with the famous club. He also worked as a major coach with Atlas, Cruz Azul, as well as two stages with Santos Laguna, who led him to the league title in 2012, before joining Matthias Almeida with earthquakes last season.
