Tsunami caused by a prehistoric earthquake that wiped out ancient communities on the coast of Chile

A multinational team of experts has discovered a major earthquake that occurred 38 hundred years in the past off the coast of what would become Chile. Evidence related to the tsunami was identified, and it had an impact on those who used to live in that area.

A devastating earthquake struck southern Chile in 1966. The largest earthquake ever recorded was measured by seismographs with a magnitude of 9.5. Evidence of population movements after the tsunami was identified by researchers, who determined that individuals moved inland as well as to higher elevations. There was also evidence that individuals had moved their burial sites. After nearly a thousand years, scientists discovered that the inhabitants did not return to the coast, but even then, they were reluctant to approach the ocean.

The scientists add that they have uncovered no evidence of how residents without a writing system could retain their memories of a tsunami for so long. They said their findings may also help with existing safety strategies for local residents.
