Madison Park Emergency Preparation: Better Together – Emergency Preparedness Spring Tasks

I had to laugh when I saw him. I was stuck in a line of cars impatiently waiting to cross the road construction heading to Madison Avenue, looking at the signs on the big truck in front of me. It announced a suite of “personalized services”—everything from picking up dry cleaners and kids to de-cluttering and preparing earthquake kits.

A chuckle came because, with all of our constant efforts to get neighbors involved in emergency preparedness, the small group of volunteers in Madison Park had never considered recommending hiring a “personal services” company to get the job done.

Well, why not? If you’re a person of potential, but with little time or desire to prepare your family for surviving a major earthquake, perhaps you could hire a home organizer or personal services assistant to get the job done.

My answer to “why not” begs another question: What else? Having some personal supplies for survival is an essential component of overcoming a disaster, and this requires some planning and organizing in advance. But just as important in the setting arena are having conversations and scenarios to consider with your family, your family, and your neighbors. In addition to putting things in place, do you have a sense of who your immediate neighbors are and how you can be beneficial to each other? Who might have some specific skills, experience, or needs in an emergency situation?

Host a social block

A joint venture is usually a good way to get to know someone. You probably already know your immediate neighbours, but you can expand the circle a bit by proposing a joint venture to help each other learn some basic skills in the event we experience a devastating earthquake or natural disaster. Can you show off your house and a drink to several of your neighbors and watch these videos together? By doing this, you may learn who has the tools, skills, or experience that may be useful; who may have movement or medical problems; What pets may need attention; Or any neighbor’s house might be a good place to gather after a disaster.

Some neighbors may be advanced in setting up tools and have clever tips to offer or help with a problem. For example, it is helpful to get other people’s opinion about where you should store your emergency supplies. It is not the same for everyone. You can mark the storage places for everything, it will likely stay dry and safe in the long run but still be accessible after a big shake.

What do you include in the way of food, supplies to stay dry and warm and your waste management systems without water to flush your toilet? I learned from a neighbor where to buy and how to best store 2.5 gallon bottles of distilled water and include an eye dropper and a small bottle of bleach with the number of drops on it to purify the entire container before drinking.

A neighbor who settled here from California came up with an idea that wouldn’t have crossed my mind – sturdy shoes hidden under my bed, tied to the pole by laces so they would be easy to find if broken glass flanked my bed when I needed to. Make a “midnight” evacuation. Another friend told me how she organized a creative “show and tell” night for the people in her building to bring out the smartest things they had included in their emergency kit. Ideas were launched as well as neighborhood relations.
