Dynamo aims to stay hot when visiting earthquakes

With a slow start behind them, the Houston Dynamo will host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday after earning a point in three straight games, while winning two of them.

Dynamo (2-1-2, eight points) went into a 3-1 win over Inter Miami last weekend, as two goals from Vava Picoult and a 49th-minute goal from Darwin Quintero got Houston starting towards a massive second half.

The sudden explosion was a welcome sight after the team failed to score in the first two games of the season and only had three goals in four games before visiting Miami.

“The guys came with the right mindset and the right behavior and that showed up on the scoreboard,” said Dynamo coach Paulo Nagamura. “The guys played the game we planned for. The guys put in an incredible performance and it’s great (to get) that first way to win away.”

Quintero has three goals leading the team and four shots on target.

The Earthquakes are hoping to ride the momentum of a second-half comeback last weekend which gave a 2-2 draw against Austin FC. Jeremy Ibobisi and Kid Coyle scored two minutes apart, with Ibobisi’s first attack not appearing until the 70th minute from a penalty kick.

San Jose (0-3-2, 2 points) is still looking for its first win of the season but appears to be on the right track having not scored in either of the previous two games before Austin came to the Bay Area. All six of San Jose’s goals this season have come from set pieces.

“We score from set-pieces because we coach them,” said defender Francisco Calvo. “We train them a lot, and we take a lot of time into that. I’m not saying we don’t take time in regular play, but it’s part of the game.

“Everyone will gain confidence in one game after another and we will try to score more goals during the match and try to put this team where they need it.”

A breakthrough into Houston’s winning column will come with an added challenge. The Earthquakes lost five straight games on the road to Dynamo.

Houston will be seeking back-to-back wins for the first time since September 2020.
