Veterans of the British Windrush: The Struggle to Be British

 



Thirty years have passed since 492 passengers left the Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks. Invited to Britain as a first-generation Caribbean worker, some went into the service of the armed forces. For decades they acted as or were believed to be British citizens in conflicts around the world.

At the Afro-Caribbean Center in Peterborough, veterans meet and play dominoes – and among them many generations who have faced deportation and questioned Britain’s immigration situation. Warning: This report contains offensive language.
