Dozens of earthquake swarms have loomed beneath the territory of the island of Puerto Rico over the past seven days.

Although there were no immediate reports of a tsunami hazard, the event could still be a potential disaster.

The latest reports indicate that 94 swarms of earthquakes have rocked the island since Monday, April 4th.

Meanwhile, 25 tremors occurred in the past 24 hours through Monday, April 11, according to meteorologists from weatherboy.com.

In December 2019, the country experienced a series of earthquake swarms, including 123 with a magnitude greater than 3.0 on the Richter scale.

In January 2020, a massive earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck the island causing many casualties and widespread disruption, causing widespread power outages affecting more than one million people; As well as the fall of four dead and nine wounded.

What are earthquake swarms?

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that earthquake swarms differ from regular earthquakes or aftershocks because they are characterized by low-impact but frequent tremors that can last for days or even months.

Earthquake swarms are often confused with earthquake aftershocks because there is no identifiable main shock.

This means that identifying the first or initial earthquake from these geological phenomena is challenging since they occur in rapid succession and most of the time simultaneously.

The USGS added that earthquake swarms are short-lived but their large numbers, similar to a swarm of insects or other related connotations, enable them to persist for a long period of time due to their mass occurrence.

Despite the weak effect of earthquake swarms, the possibility of a “strong earthquake” or “large earthquake” cannot be ruled out.

This is due to the fact that a series of tremors continues to affect the underground tectonic plates. The movement of these plates is the main cause of shocks, according to the USGS.

The difference with aftershocks

Over the years, anecdotal evidence, media reports, and concerned geo-seismic agencies indicate that aftershocks usually occur immediately after a primary earthquake.

Since the motions of the tectonic plates are unstable, a major earthquake can still have residual effects underground.

However, the US Geological Agency is quick to point out that there are cases where aftershocks are stronger than the initial tremor.

When this happens, the aftershock will now become the main earthquake and the previous main earthquake will be classified as a precursor.

Puerto Rico sits above the edge of the Caribbean tectonic plate, which constantly collides with the North American plate, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
