Appointment of a new Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Earthquake Committee

A former president of an insurance company will take over as chair of the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

Chris Black, recently retired CEO of Farmers Mutual Group, will replace Mary Jane Daly, who will retire as president in July. Black is a former president of the Insurance Council.

Former Labor Secretary Ruth Dyson will be the new vice chair of the Environmental Quality Council. Dyson is a current member of the EQC Board of Directors.

EQC, a government-owned insurance company that covers natural disasters including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides, has been the subject of a high-profile report following the Christchurch earthquakes.

The 246-page report, written by Ms. Sylvia Cartwright, was released in 2020 and contains 70 recommendations.

EQC Minister David Clark said on Tuesday that 49 of those recommendations have been completed.
