Utah may start sending earthquake alerts to your phone

A little more than two years ago, Utah shook. The Magna earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and caused $70 million in damage, but the director of the Utah Seismology Program, John Crofts, said Magna is not the last earthquake in Utah.

“A lot of people understand or have a misconception that our earthquake, our Magna, relieved pressure along the Wasatch Fault,” Crofts said. “This is not necessarily true. There is still enough pressure along the fault.”

In order to help Utah prepare, geologists are looking into the feasibility of an alert system similar to the Amber Alerts. The director of the Utah Geological Survey, Bill Keach, said the alerts aren’t just to help you get to a safer place.

“The intent of earthquake early warning is to send notifications to people that they may need to get out,” Kitsch said. “To facilities they might need to close, and to transportation they might need to stop for a moment.”

The system will send alerts after the first earthquake wave, Keach said, in preparation for the most damaging waves. He said it was not an easy task.

“No one can predict when an earthquake will happen. What we can do with technology today, is get advance notice before the most damaging waves appear in your home,” Keach said.

Crofts said that while this is a major coordination effort, Utah has no shortage of a helping hand.

“There is a huge variety of groups and individuals who really want to make Utah a better, safer place,” Crofts said. “We are working to improve our future.”

Geologists are in the first step of the process right now after receiving $150,000 for a feasibility study from the legislature.
