New Delhi: On Tuesday (9 June), the Delhi High Court asked the Delhi government and civil authorities to provide a written statement of the earthquake’s situation in the national capital. The court also issued a notice to the Delhi First Secretary, the Municipal Commissioners, the Cantonal Council and the Deputy Chief of the Department for Disarmament Affairs to provide their response and to educate citizens about the precautions they can take.

The petition, filed by attorney Arbit Bhargav, requested that the court direct the Delhi government and civil authorities to act in a time-bound manner.

The petition also prayed that the authorities must inform the court of the steps they have taken and intend to take by the government and relevant authorities. It also sought to know administrative preparedness in the event of a major earthquake in Delhi.

Lawyer Arbit Bhargave spoke about a series of earthquakes recently seen in the capital and cited the opinions of various experts predicting the possibility of a major earthquake in Delhi-NCR in the near future.

“Indeed, many experts from IIT and government agencies have recorded in various print media that builders and architects have created a compromise relationship about strict adherence to earthquake-related standards as well as the need to review building codes and detail other safety measures,” the petition said, asking the court to intervene in order to Greater public interest and prompt directions.

The petitioner said that the situation could be far more damaging than the current COVID 19 cases if a major earthquake struck Delhi given the “1,700 unauthorized colonies” that include more than “50 people lakh”.

He also said that only 10 to 15% of Delhi’s buildings comply with the building code and regulations.
