Syrian conflict: Turkey and Russia announce Idlib ceasefire – BBC News

A ceasefire has just been launched in Syrian province of Idlib to prevent a major escalation. In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan also agreed to establish a joint security corridor and patrols. Last month, 36 Turkish soldiers were killed in a Russian-backed Syrian government attack on Idlib. Turkey, which is in favor of opposition rebels, responded by attacking Syrian troops. The incident sparked fears of a direct military conflict between Turkey and Russia. BBC International Correspondent Orla Guerin reports that Russian airstrikes on a farm in Maarat Misrin (Idlib province) killed 16 civilians on Thursday morning. According to UN estimates, nearly a million people have fled their homes in Idlebe as a result of fighting since December. It has put more pressure on Turkey, which has already taken in nearly four million Syrian refugees. After repeatedly threatening the European Union to take action, Turkey opened its border with Greece last week. Thousands of migrants have been trying to cross into the EU ever since.
