Hundreds of Earthquakes Rattle Yellowstone; Scientists don’t think the volcano will erupt soon

Despite two earthquakes causing 254 individual earthquakes in Yellowstone National Park in March, an active volcano in the area under the area is not expected to erupt anytime soon.

Regarding seismic activity, Dr. Jamie Farrell, an assistant professor at the University of Utah, said the activity is not unusual and it’s just “Yellowstone being Yellowstone.”

“None of the swarms are really spectacular,” Farrell said of the two swarms recorded in March and of the five other swarms that have been recorded so far this year.

“All of these are very normal. This is how Yellowstone normally functions. None of the swarms were anywhere we wouldn’t expect them to. It has been a normal year for us so far.”

Of those earthquakes, only 21 were recorded above a magnitude 2 and none reached a magnitude 3, which means that it is unlikely that anyone could feel them. Besides, it probably won’t mean anything.

The hundreds of earthquakes, Farrell said, that form a swarm, don’t necessarily indicate that an eruption will occur any time soon.

However, there are several clues that may give scientists an alert when Yellowstone is next due to erupt, citing deformation of the Earth, the location of magma, earthquakes, and changes in the discharge of gases released by the volcanoes.

“The monitoring system that we put in place, most likely, will inform us that an eruption is going to happen before it happens,” he said.

But how long scientists will have it is unknown. He said the signs could appear years, months, weeks, days or hours earlier. But they will probably know it when they see it.

“There’s a good chance we know in advance that magma was heading toward Earth,” he said. “There is no evidence that this is close to this happening.”

The National Park Service said be on the lookout for lava flows. The lava flow will slowly flow over months and years, giving park managers plenty of time to assess the situation and protect people.

“There is no scientific evidence to suggest that such a lava flow will occur soon,” an NPS spokesperson said.

“I haven’t heard anything from them lately,” Farrell said. “Maybe they are tired of it.”
