Experts: Black Sea fault lines could trigger major earthquakes in northern Turkey

The April 11 earthquake off the Black Sea coast renewed fears of a major disaster in the northern region of Turkey. The tremors felt by people as far as Istanbul were the result of a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that had its epicenter in Eregli in Zonguldak Province, about 270 kilometers (168 miles) to the east. Professor Hasan Sözbilir, who heads a center for earthquake research, says fault lines in the Black Sea have the potential to cause a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, a rather devastating scale.

Turkey has always been on earthquake alert where fault lines intersect, especially after the 1999 earthquake that killed thousands of people in the country’s northwest. Western parts of the Black Sea region suffered their fair share of devastation and deaths, with the 1999 earthquake off the Black Sea coast and another in Duzce, just a few months later, killing hundreds.

The latest earthquake was caused by a northeast-southwest fault line running parallel to the western coast of Turkey’s Black Sea region, said Sözbilir, who heads the Center for Earthquake Research and Application at Dokuz Eylül University. He told Demiroren News Agency (DHA) on Wednesday that the Black Sea region was likely sandwiched between fault lines in the sea and the North Anatolian fault line on land, which was the cause of the 1999 earthquake.

“There are active fault lines under the Black Sea and we last saw their activity in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Bartin (a Black Sea province) in 1968. It is critical to create a better map of the area to examine the underwater fault lines and look for their potential. He cautioned that we also need to To know the potential dangers of tsunamis on cities across the region.

For Professor Nasi Gorur, it is a matter of time and not of where to see another devastating earthquake, especially for Istanbul, the most populous city in Turkey. Gurur, a geologist, said the Egli quake had nothing to do with the fault lines that run through the Marmara region in the west, which also includes Istanbul.
