Preparedness these days usually refers to fire preparedness, but the Sonoma County Department of Preparedness, Response and Recovery reminds everyone that earthquake preparedness is just as important. That’s why they’re moving the Sonoma County Shake Out to spring, when our interest is no longer in competition with other potential disasters.

“With wildfires so alarming in October, the Great Quake Exercise is often not on everyone’s mind,” county officials said in an announcement for Shake Out. “Preparing for earthquakes is really important, so we are moving the exercise to April 18 for Sonoma County!”

The new date is also fitting because it is the anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The “land, cover, hold” exercise is Mondays at 10 a.m., Sonoma. More information at socoemarily.org.

A reader contacted the Glass Empty department with a report of a suspicious letter she received in the mail. He claimed to be from a company called Adaptive Health Integration and told her the privacy and security of her personal information regarding her insurance card had been hacked and they disabled her access unless she called the number at the bottom of the message. There was no return address on the envelope. She said she was “very concerned about this”.

An internet search revealed a health clinic with that name based in Scottsdale, Arizona, but nothing to suggest a link to insurance. Wisely, the woman did not respond to what might have been a scam. “I don’t want to be deceived by anyone trying to steal my information,” she said. – Jason Walsh
