Ensenada earthquake hits San Diego, Californians report ‘severe tremors’

A 4.6 Magnitude earthquake hit Mexico as locals in California experienced severe tremors, according to reports.

The quake hit the coastal city of Ensenada, Mexico, but was felt by residents in San Diego County around 9:30 p.m. local time Thursday.

The earthquake began nine miles below the sea floor – about 80 miles southeast of San Diego.

The earthquakes were felt in La Mesa, Spring Valley, and Pacific Beach by residents.

There were also reports of shaking in southern Orange County.

The tremors were felt as far away as Oceanside, according to ABC7.

“It was a very sharp, rapid tremor that was widely felt in San Diego,” USGS geologist Tom Rockwell told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Officials with the US National Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was unlikely to trigger a tsunami.

The earthquake came nearly 12 years after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Baja California on Easter Sunday in 2010.
