Football: Seismic Coach, alerting former Mexico star Benjamin Galindo after brain surgery and stroke

June 9 (UPI) – San Jose Earthquake assistant coach Benjamin Galindo was awake and alert after suffering a stroke and brain surgery and was in a medically induced coma.

The NFL franchise provided an update on Galindo on Monday. Galindo, 59, suffered a stroke on May 28 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was awake and spoke to his family on Sunday in Guadalajara.

“He became increasingly alert and began talking to family members while he was staying at the hospital in Guadalajara,” the earthquakes said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and respect for the privacy demanded by the Galindo family.”

Galindo was a star midfielder in the Spanish league, and participated in 65 games with the Mexican national team as a player from 1979 to 1997. He scored more than 200 goals in more than 700 games during his career with the club. He scored 28 goals in 65 caps.

He ran several Liga MX and American amateur club Corinthians FC of San Antonio before becoming earthquake aide in 2018.

Galindo’s son, Benjamin Galindo Junior, is a defender of the Liga MX C.D. Guadalajara. The NBA season has been suspended since mid-March. The league has plans for a July session in Orlando, Florida.
