An average earthquake of 4.6 magnitude hits the regions of San Diego and Tijuana

April 15 (UPI) – A moderate-sized earthquake rocked the region near the western US-Mexico border late Thursday, and the shaking could be felt from San Diego to southern Tijuana.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.6, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred about 13 miles west of El Suzal, Mexico, at a depth of about 9 miles. El Sauzal is located 60 miles south of Tijuana.

“It was a very sharp, rapid tremor that was felt widely in San Diego,” Tom Rockwell, an American geologist and San Diego State University geologist, told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Rock said the quake occurred along the Acqua Blanca fault between west and northwest of Ensenada.

The USGS intensity map shows that the seismic event produced weak shaking and did not cause damage in most of the affected areas. Chula Vista, California, Tijuana and Ensenada experienced mild or moderate shaking.

Only minor damage was reported from the earthquake.

The Aqua Blanca Fault caused a 7.0 earthquake more than 350 years ago, shaking most of what is now southern California. On the Easter weekend of 2010, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake occurred near Guadalupe Victoria in Baja California.
