Cracks reported on the Los Olivos Bridge in Tijuana after the Baja California earthquake – NBC7 San Diego

City officials have partially closed the Los Olivos Bridge in Rio Tijuana while they check and rule out further damage after the 4.6 earthquake in El Suzal, Baja California, that shook Southern California.

On Friday morning, the highway heading west to El Florido was closed for inspection.

According to engineer César Ulises López Torres, a specialist in structures and a member of the bridge committee and a professor at the Tijuana Technological University, structural deficiencies have already been identified, and they are working on repairs.

According to the expert, the cracks that can be clearly seen on the bridge were already there before Thursday’s earthquake.

“This is a poorly constructed bridge structure that no longer has the capacity to accommodate the type of vehicles it was designed for,” Lopez Torres said. But “there are some cracks in the stirrup that were not considered in the study” which caused it to close.

“‘What does this mean?’ We have to move quickly. The city council is already taking action on this and we think this is a warning of what’s going to happen. What we don’t want is for this city to collapse.”

According to the Municipal Civil Protection, other structures in the Rio Tijuana metropolitan area were also reviewed, and no other damages were reported.

The earthquake struck the Agua Blanca Fault around 9:31 p.m. Thursday, along the Agua Blanca Fault between west and northwest of Ensenada, Mexico. The eruption briefly shook parts of San Diego County, said Tom Rockwell, a geologist at San Diego State University.
