Local elections 2022: Wirral could shake up political voting crisis

One part of Wirral can tell the story of the massive change in the council.

On May 5, voters went to the polls to elect a third of Wirral Council members. The Labor Party is the largest party and has the leadership of the Council, but it does not have a majority. In May, the Greens hope to tear apart some of the party’s strongholds.

The Greens could gain seats in Birkenhead, Tranmere, Brenton and Byington. But if the party gets its first seat in Wallace, it will send shock waves through the ranks of Labour.

Seacombe has been a strong Labor seat for years, but here the Greens are hoping to push Labor hard. The European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) visited the ward to see if anything might change after years of worker domination.

The vast majority of people spoken to said they would not vote, a worrying sign of democracy in the region. Their reasons were many, they were frustrated and ignored by the politicians and lost any hope that the council could help them.

Those who were planning to vote would give the Greens reason to be excited. David Mullineux, 51, who has lived in Seacombe his whole life, said he plans to vote for Green because they care about the place and want to do good things for Seacombe.

Mr. Molino said they were helping to clean the area and entrances and that he liked the green filter. Kevin, 73, who did not want to reveal his surname and also lives in Seacombe, said he would likely vote for the Greens.

He said politicians are self-serving and don’t care about the working man. He felt that the Greens might offer something different. Kevin also mentioned the recent Labor government’s record and said he would not vote for the party because Gordon Brown sold off a lot of the country’s gold reserves and the party left the country with more debt than it once did.

Workers may protest and say that the debt was caused by the financial crisis and that events many years ago should not have decided the elections in Wirral today, but for some people, the events of the 2000s are still central to their political thinking.

Few people said they were voting when ECHO at Seacombe asked them

As for today’s issues, Kevin was concerned about immigration, saying he feels the country is overcrowded, and believes politicians including the Conservative government have been out of touch and uninterested in helping ordinary people deal with problems like the high gas prices we’re seeing. at the moment.

Another voter, who asked not to be named, said he has always voted for Labor and will continue to do so. In general, the disturbing image on the ground at Seacombe was one of indifference and disinterest in local politics.

Over the next few weeks, the four candidates vying to become new board members in the district should try to change that and generate some enthusiasm for their agenda. That’s what every candidate said.

John Howe (work)

“Seacombe Workers’ Council member Paul Stewart has suggested in this year’s budget that money saved by lowering the heating temperature in council buildings by two degrees could be used to help support at-risk residents to meet the demands of higher energy prices,” said Mr. Hoy.

“Savings of £113,000 have been put in place to support vulnerable populations to meet the demands of rising energy prices. I have been out meeting people on the doorstep, and things like this can make a real difference in times of need.

The Greens and the Liberal Democrats voted against a statutory budget that included this subsidy to help the most vulnerable with the cost of their fuel bills. A project to remove bloated alleys and tipping makes a big difference.

“I’ve been working with council members and residents to apply for grants from the Wirral Together Farmers and Plants Trust for residents to narrow down their alleys. New alley gates have been installed at several locations in Seacombe to improve community safety and reduce anti-social behaviour. It’s great to see residents coming together to create their own community space to enjoy.”

The Labor-led administration has secured a £37m funding package from the Liverpool City District Joint Authority. This has already helped here at Seacombe, with Breck Road, Dock Road and Brighton Street re-paving the road, with Borough Road and Mainwaring later this year.

Residents will also see footpath improvements on Elmbank Street, Winford Street, Barry Street and Dock Road. This is something I am keen to build on, to ensure we have safer roads and sidewalks.”

Ray Fuller (Green Party)

“I am doing my year-round campaign of hard work for the residents of Seacombe,” said Ms. Fuller. “It is clear from the many conversations that took place on the doorstep that people here feel left behind and that no one is listening to them.

“This is changing as a growing population embraces a strong track record of greens for continued engagement on the important issues here – a cleaner, more inviting environment, safer streets, and widespread concern that Seacombe is a forgotten wing of the town hall. Seacombe has been a safe seat for workers as long as anyone can someone to remember him.

But the prevailing opinion is that he did not provide the region any service. People have seen the impact the Green Party had on Birkenhead’s wings and how the party stood in favor of local services.

“They saw their bookstore close their doors at their local One Stop Shop, and more and more of them were switching to Green. For the first time in decades, Sicombe is a two-horse race rather than a one-horse race.”

Bobby Cartwright (Governor)

Ms. Cartwright said: “I welcome the challenge of competing at Seacombe, not least because I believe it is an honor to be elected as a Councilman. I am proud of my record of service at Preston and, if elected, I will work hard for the people of Seacombe and Bolton.”

“The government has committed unprecedented amounts of money to renovate and transform Seacombe, Birkenhead and surrounding areas, but it needs a fully committed, conservative local consultant to make sure this community gets the most from the investment. I welcome the opportunity to make that happen.”

Ms Cartwright said her priorities are to make sure the investment in Wirral Waters benefits the wider Seacombe and Poulton community, improving housing conditions and tackling growth in multi-professional homes, as well as tackling issues such as litter, dog contamination, heart flies and graffiti.

Anthony Morris (Liberal Democrat).

Mr. Morris said: “People are worried about the cost of living, rising energy prices and meeting their needs. Locals will pay more council taxes, face higher fees for many services, and see some utilities closed.

The latest budget was proposed by Labour, with the support and help of the Conservatives who voted against our legal moves to change it. Lib Dems are determined to transform Wirral. The redevelopment of the sites of abandoned fields and neglected areas will eventually pay off.

Meanwhile, Wirral is caught between a rock and a hard place until the government finance boards do justice. National events will take center stage in people’s minds. Everyone’s campaign comes in the context of the horror we see in Ukraine.

“Boris Johnson’s government continues to get hurt by the way some officials and politicians have broken the rules during lockdowns, with a US base and their own in a vein shutdown. Partygate may have been overshadowed by events but the hurt hasn’t gone away.

“I expect conservatives to pay a heavy price at the polls for their dismissive attitude toward ordinary people.”
