More buildings using ID system

More and more buildings in Turkey are being integrated into a system that helps authorities get instant information about these structures and dwellings in the event of an earthquake.

Under the building identification system, each building is assigned a unique QR code, with chipsets installed that store information such as who lives in the building and floor plans.

Nearly 27,000 buildings have so far adopted the system across Turkey since it was launched by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change a year ago.

QR codes and chips are mainly set and installed in newly constructed buildings. About 2,600 buildings in Istanbul have been added to the system. Experts believe that a large and powerful earthquake in Istanbul, which is home to more than 15 million people, is imminent.

In the southern province of Antalya, 1,900 buildings joined the programme, while in Izmir, Turkey’s third most populous city where about 120 people were killed in the 2020 earthquake, another 1,900 were allocated tokens and chips.

The authorities decided to develop the system after 21 people were killed when a building collapsed in the Kartal district of Istanbul in 2019. They found that some floors of the collapsed building had been built without permission.

The identification system allows homebuyers and potential tenants to access technical information about the apartment they are planning to buy or rent.

This information is provided through banners or ID cards, developed by the major Turkish defense company ASELSAN, that are hung on buildings.

The system also helps authorities prevent illegal construction.
