San Jose Earthquakes splits from coach Matias Almeida

The San Jose Earthquakes have parted with coach Matias Almeida, the team announced Monday. Almeida has coached San Jose since 2018.

His coaching staff consisting of Omar Zarif, Carlos Roa, Daniel Vega, Guido Bonini, Fabio Alvarez and Agustin Zalazar is also leaving Quakes.

San Jose said Alex Covelo, the Earthquakes 2 coach at MLS Next Pro, will serve as the interim coach. Earthquake legend Chris Wondolofsky is among those who will serve as temporary assistant coaches, as is Steve Ralston who has won seven times in the MLS. The team will begin the search for a permanent coach immediately.

Almeida hinted at a possible departure in February ahead of the Earthquakes 2022 opener against the New York Red Bulls, saying, “I have 10 months before I’m free,” referring to a “certain subject” to his contract placement.

“Live day by day, I can’t avoid having people trying to sign us as coaching staff. I was very clear at the end of last season with both our owner and general manager, and I was very clear with them at the start of the season too.”

In his four-season spell with San Jose, he held the record 33-26-44. Prior to coming to San Jose, Almeida served as coach of Chivas de Guadalajara from September 2015 to June 2018, leading the club to five titles in his three seasons.

Almeida, 48, played as a defensive midfielder in five countries before becoming a coach. He also participated in 35 matches with the Argentina national team, scored five goals, and represented his country in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
