San Jose Earthquakes won the US Open first under Alex Covello

A day after the separation of the San Jose Earthquakes and now former head coach Matias Almeida, the Coaxes have started their all-new coaching staff in full swing.

San Jose opened Tuesday’s US Open Cup career with a 5-0 win over Bay Cities FC, a third-tier professional team based in Redwood City, for 8,058 paid attendees at PayPal Park.

Interim coach Alex Covelo, who was coaching the Earthquakes academy team in the new MLS development league, threw all the praise to his players – the same players who Almeida reportedly said had “finished” two games before that.

“I think the players put in an amazing performance. They could have won on their own,” said Covello. We have a very good group of players.”

Jack Scahan, who scored his first professional goal from a free kick in the 25th minute, said the match plan was “completely different” under Covelo and his new coaching staff, which includes Earthquake legend Chris Wondolowski.

“There are a few different things, structurally speaking, especially when we’re attacking, that we’re put in a position to specifically stop counter-attacks,” Scahan said. “And you can see a lot of that going back out in the middle to sit next to the six. And I think we put it together really well.

“I think we haven’t really had any time to practice it and we’ve really translated well as a team and we have a lot to build on.”

16-year-old Niko Tsakiris, of Saratoga, scored his first professional goal in the 83rd minute. Signed in January as a local player, Tsakiris had twice as a substitute during MLS competition before making his first game and playing the full 90 minutes on Tuesday.

Ousseni Bouda, Earthquakes’ best pick from the 2022 MLS SuperDraft from Stanford, scored his first professional goal with the fifth and final score in the 88th minute. San Jose’s other pick in the first round of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, defender Oscar Agren made his professional debut and played in the match entire.

The Earthquakes, last in the NBA with three points from seven games, return to league games at 7 p.m. Saturday when they host the Seattle Sounders.
