Thousands across the state practice earthquake safety as part of the Great Utah ShakeOut

SALT LAKE CITY – Hundreds of thousands of Utahns took part in a practice Thursday morning to see how well they prepared when an earthquake hits.

It is part of the Great Utah ShakeOut.

This is the eleventh year that the country’s leaders have launched the programme.

We live in an earthquake country, so emergency managers say it’s important to be prepared for a major earthquake.

Students at Calvin Smith Elementary School in Taylorsville put their preparations into practice.

The announcement came via the intercom and the students immediately got off their seats, fell to the ground and sat under the benches.

They were among nearly 900,000 who took part in the Great Utah ShakeOut – the state’s largest earthquake drill.

Lisa MacDonald, principal of Calvin Smith Elementary School, says they spent weeks preparing students for the day.

“A lot of them remember the earthquake two years ago, so they said, ‘Oh, some things in our house broke. “

The Magna earthquake was the focus of many people’s attention. For many Utahns, it may be the first recent earthquake they’ve ever felt. They didn’t really know what to do,” said Wade Matthews of the Utah Department of Emergency Management.

He says the best way to protect yourself is to fall down, cover up, and hang on.

It can happen differently, depending on where you are.

“If you’re in bed, stay in bed and pull your pillow over your head to protect your face and head from flying debris, and things falling off the shelves.”

If you are driving, stop as soon as you can do so safely and stay in your car.

Don’t run outside or into other rooms while shaking and don’t stand in the doorway, says Matthews.

The hope is that after doing these exercises, people feel more prepared about the risk of an earthquake.

“I want them to come up with a plan for what to do if this happens again,” MacDonald said.

You can still sign up and schedule another day’s workout and it will count toward the state’s million participation goal.
