EL CENTRO, CA (KYMA, KECY) – Seismic activity is high in Imperial County with a series of earthquakes rocking the area in the last 72 hours.

The latest earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.6, occurred on Thursday, just before noon. A 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck the valley on Tuesday night.

The series of earthquakes brings us back to the question, are we ready for the next big earthquake?

The US Geological Survey says the Brawley Seismic Zone between the northern end of the Imperial Fault and the southern end of the San Andreas Fault is a tectonically active area, where many earthquake swarms have occurred over the past several decades.

The El Centro Fire Department is urging residents to prepare for an event that will not issue any warning before it happens.

A series of earthquakes hit Imperial County on Tuesday, with the latest earthquake of magnitude 3.5 shaking Imperial County on Tuesday night.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was four miles northwest of Brawley, California.

An earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale struck Imperial Valley at 8:59 p.m. in the same area.

Batallion chief Cedric Ceseña of El Centro Fire says it’s important that valley residents stay prepared for an earthquake.

“Residents at home should have kits of necessities, maybe even medicines,” he said.
