Utah residents brace for earthquakes with ‘Great Utah ShakeOut’

More than 870,000 Utah residents practiced their earthquake preparedness skills as part of the annual Great Utah ShakeOut event Thursday morning.

April 22 (UPI) – More than 870,000 Utah residents have practiced their earthquake preparedness skills as part of the annual Great Utah ShakeOut event.

While some may not think of Utah first when it comes to earthquakes, Department of Emergency Management officials, who hosted Thursday morning’s event, said 90% of Utah’s residents live in active earthquake areas.

“Utah has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past, and geological evidence suggests that earthquakes larger than any earthquakes that occurred locally in historical time are likely in the future,” emergency management officials said on the Great Utah ShakeOut website.

“Large earthquakes are possible anywhere in Utah, but they are most likely in a ‘seismic belt’ about 100 miles wide that extends north-south along the Wasatch front and through Richfield to Cedar City and St. George. The average Utah earthquake is 6.” Once every 15 to 20 years.

This is the 11th year of the event, and the turnout has increased from 730,000 entries last year.

Officials advised residents to abandon them, cover up and protect themselves during the earthquake. During training, the school children fell to the floor and sat under the desks.

Utah officials said some residents may rule out earthquake risks based on the near-total absence of moderate to large earthquakes, but the possibility is real.

“Most people who live in Utah today have not experienced a devastating earthquake in the state,” Great Utah ShakeOut officials said. “They are unaware of the long periods between large earthquakes on faults in the basin and ridge province.

“Comparing the average recurrence period with the amount of time since the last major earthquake indicates that the next major earthquake is becoming increasingly likely over certain parts of the Wasatch Fault.”
