5.0 magnitude earthquake hits coast off Vancouver Island; No tsunami expected

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit the coast off northwest Vancouver Island on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Canadian earthquake website, the quake occurred just after 2:20 pm, about 166 kilometers west of Alice Harbor and at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

In its own assessment, the USGS rated the earthquake as 5.3.

M5 earthquake off the northern tip of Vancouver Island today at 2:22 pm 165 km west of Alice Harbor. Only a few people felt it, no damage and no tsunami.

At least two people reported feeling weak shaking, according to Earthquakes Canada, but there were no reports of damage.
