Match summary: Tacoma Defiance Battles to draw 2-2 with Earthquakes II Monday night

San Jose, Khalif. – The Tacoma Defiance (1-2-2, 6 points) tied Earthquakes II (1-2-1, 4 points) 2-2 Monday night at PayPal Park. Alfonso Ocampo-Chávez and Sam Adeniran scored the two goals for Tacoma, as goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley saved the next penalty shootout to send Deviance home with two points.

Tacoma opened the scoring in the eighth minute, courtesy of Ocampo Chavez. A cross from Adiniran found the head of the first-team striker, who shot the ball down and into the back of the net to score his fifth goal in more than two matches. The California native of the year, Merced’s five-strokes were tied to most of them in the MLS NEXT Pro.

Earthquakes II leveled the game five minutes later when Ousseni Bouda hit Tacoma’s backline and netted the net.

Adeniran put Tacoma back in front two minutes later with a raucous shot, as he boarded a shot from just outside the area and smashed the ball into the top corner. Boda got his second goal of the night in the 40th minute, firing a shot of his own in the upper nineties leveling the score before the end of the first half.

As per the league rules, with the score remaining 2-2 for the rest of the match, the two teams were headed to penalty shootouts. Lapsley parried Maximilian Arfsten while Tacoma converted all his attempts, giving the visitors a 5-4 penalty shootout win and the extra point.

Wade Webber returns home next week to face the undefeated Houston Dynamo 2 on Sunday, May 1 (3:00 p.m. PT/mlsnextpro.com).
