April 27 (UPI) — Scientists have discovered that a series of more than 80,000 earthquakes occurred about two years ago near a long-dormant underwater volcano in the sea off Antarctica, according to new research.

The report, published by an international team of researchers, said the earthquakes – which occurred mainly between August and November 2020 – were most likely caused by a “finger” of hot magma that slightly penetrated the Earth’s crust.

The group of earthquakes was the strongest seismic activity ever recorded in Antarctica, the researchers said.

The study says that the two strongest earthquakes that occurred during the seismic extension were of magnitude 6.0 and 5.9.

Simon Cesca, lead author of the report, is a seismologist at the German GFZ Research Center for Geosciences in Potsdam.

“There have been similar intrusions elsewhere on Earth, but this is the first time we’ve observed it there,” he told Live Science.

The large group of earthquakes, numbering about 85 thousand, was the result of the rapid transfer of magma from the Earth’s mantle to the near surface, the newspaper said.

“During the second half of 2020, a swarm of at least 85,000 earthquakes occurred under the Bransfield Strait, a sea channel separating the Antarctic mainland from the South Shetland Islands,” Siska wrote in a post called Beyond Paper.

Siska wrote that the underwater volcano Orca is a “large submarine shield volcano” that rises about 3,000 feet above the sea floor. It is named after the Orca whale, which is frequently seen in the area’s waters.

The researcher also pointed out that conducting a geophysical study at such a remote site is a challenge because there are few seismic and geodetic stations. Moreover, the amount of ice and frequent cloudy weather reduce the study potential.

“The data cannot provide any direct evidence of an undersea eruption,” Cesca wrote. “Only a future naval survey may be able to establish whether or not a submarine explosion occurred.”
