A defect in the road causes “significant vibrations” that affect neighboring properties.

A Bishopthorpe Road resident reported a bug in the driveway adjacent to the Village Spice takway via Fix My Street – a website where residents can anonymously report what needs fixing to their council in their local area.

The resident explained that whenever a large vehicle, such as a bus or truck, moved over the fault, it would cause “significant vibration” through the property along Bishopthorpe Road.

The resident claimed that the defect causes an impact to the frames, causing vibrations that “physically shake properties like a small earthquake,” keeping residents awake at night and shaking picture frames hanging on the walls.

A York City Council spokesman said: “The trench was excavated in 2016 by Virgin Media. We are aware of reports of vibrations in Bishopthorpe Road, and it will be considered as part of the annual surface maintenance programme.

“Unfortunately, the slightly sunken trench was examined several times following reports from residents and each time observations were made.”

However, residents say the council previously told them the condition was too minor to be considered for repair.

The board told the press that the maximum difference in levels is 9 mm, while the board’s achievement level is 40 mm.

One resident, who asked not to be identified, said, “Although it doesn’t look bad, the vibrations are felt throughout the house and wake you up at night when a bus, truck, or car passes overhead.

“I have reported this to the board on three occasions but they said it did not meet the required measurements to be fixed – one of my complaints was closed within an hour.

“It’s going to take a bit more surface to level it up on the road, and we’re not asking for much.”

Another resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, had just moved into his property late last year.

She said: “We wondered if it was just us, but we found in the Whatsapp community that other residents felt it.

“In transforming our loft, the pictures on the wall move and vibrate and the vibrations can be felt in our bedrooms.

“I have reported this to the board but after four to six weeks of waiting for a response, nothing has been done about it.”
