Hospitality companies involved after Wellington building evacuated due to earthquake safety issues

More than 100 employees have left the Meridian office building on Wellington’s waterfront due to earthquake safety issues.

The building is designed to be 100 percent or higher of the new building standard, but its owner, Stride Property Group, says initial indications from an ongoing assessment suggest the building may be below 34 percent of the new building standard.

Stride said the building, which opened in 2007, has performed very well in previous large earthquakes including the 2013 Sidon earthquake and the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake.

But the company recently learned that the drug may not meet safety standards.

“Investigations conducted during 2021 revealed that there has been significant learning and development as a result of recent seismic events, particularly regarding the geotechnical (ground) conditions in Wellington. As a result of this information, our consultants have informed us that the property may not perform in a seismic event in the way that was expected from before “.

Investigations are still underway to determine the seismic classification of the building.

Meanwhile, some tenants have decided to vacate, including Meridian, which has sent 180 employees home.

“While awaiting the final results of the evaluation, as a precaution, Meridian has advised its employees to work from home while they obtain alternative office space ready to work,” a company spokesperson said.
