The Seismology Center says, don’t panic because of the recent earthquakes in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi: The director of the National Seismology Center (BK Bansal) has cleared the air by saying that he does not have to panic over the recent earthquakes in Delhi-NCR but it is important to be prepared and take precautionary measures.

According to a statement of the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Bansal spoke at a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority on Wednesday and said that given the history of earthquakes in Delhi, the small earthquakes in Delhi-NCR are not unusual.

He said there is no reason to panic, but it is important to take preparedness and mitigation measures to reduce risks, adding that there is no proven technology in the world to predict earthquakes with certainty in terms of location, time and size.

National Disaster Management Authorities (NDMA) asked state governments to take steps that included ensuring compliance with sub-building laws to make upcoming construction earthquake-proof and avoiding adding stock of buildings at risk.

It was suggested that they identify and modify vulnerable structures, especially lifeblood buildings. Private buildings should also be modified gradually.

NDMA advised state governments to conduct regular mock exercises and come up with SoPs for immediate response after the earthquake.

She said the implementation of public awareness programs on “what should and should not be done” during the earthquake.

Attended the meeting to discuss various mitigation and preparedness measures to reduce earthquake risk in the Delhi-NCR region, through audio conferences held by NDMA members, Director General of the National Disaster Response Force and senior officers in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh state.

The Delhi-NCR region has experienced nearly a dozen low-intensity earthquakes in the past three months.
