Muawiya Barzanji, “spirit” of geosciences, dies at 80

Muawiyah Barzanji, Professor Emeritus of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, died on March 30 in Ithaca at the age of 80.

Matthew Pritchard, professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, said that apart from his research, Parazanji has made a lasting impact by mentoring students and junior faculty.

“He cared in so many ways,” Pritchard said. Muawiya could always be counted as coming to student seminars, asking thoughtful questions and working with students to improve their presentations. He had such a contagious sense of humor that he often said, “You can still be a seismologist.”

Barazangi has helped train countless graduate students, research staff, and scientists, and guide them in assessing earthquake probabilities in order to raise awareness among officials and environmental scientists about the dangers and the necessity of enacting building codes. He has also directed researchers in analyzing data and writing scientific reports, assisting them in authoring and co-authoring more than 130 research papers in numerous journals and monographs.
