85,000 earthquakes hit Antarctica in 2020 over three months

Scientists believe they have discovered the mystery behind the 85,000 earthquakes that hit Antarctica in 2020.

Experts believe it was all caused by a previously dormant underwater volcano called Mt. Orca, which awoke.

The volcano was found deep in the sea near King George Island and scientists working there at research stations felt some earthquakes.

This event was the strongest earthquake activity ever recorded in Antarctica.

Researchers from the German Research Center for Geosciences used seismometers and remote sensing techniques to find out how long the earthquake “swarm” lasted and what caused it.

They found that the tremors occurred over a three-month period between August and November 2020.

“In the past, earthquakes in this region were moderate. However, in August 2020, an intense seismic swarm began there,” said the study’s lead author, Simon Siska.

“It represents the largest seismic disturbance ever recorded there,” he added.

The team was able to discover more information by compiling data from the closest research stations in Antarctica, along with information and satellite data from seismic stations that monitor earthquakes located farther away.

The earthquakes, say the researchers, were caused by the extremely rapid transfer of lava from the Earth’s mantle almost to its surface.

The two largest earthquakes that occurred were a 5.9-magnitude quake in October 2020 and a 6.0-magnitude quake a month later.
