Antarctic earthquake: Antarctica experiences massive swarm of earthquakes as an inactive volcano erupts

Antarctica has detected a huge swarm of earthquakes that, according to experts, was caused by the eruption of an inactive volcano called Orca. The earthquake affected areas of the Bransfield Strait, says research published in Communications Earth and Environment, a nature journal. Brandfeelf Strait is a body of water about 60 miles wide located between the South Shetland Islands and the northwest point of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Orca volcano has a roughly circular cone, the core of which is 7 miles long. The height of the volcano is 2,950 feet.

Many scientists have investigated ways to study and trace the geographical, physical, and climatic effects of an Antarctic earthquake swarm. They also extracted data on the size of the shocks. These data clarified the possible reasons for the occurrence of a large number. Among the many possible causes, the main one was the movement of magma in the Earth’s crust.

Research and studies on possible volcanic eruptions in Antarctica are still ongoing. The lack of data on all of these is major due to the region’s remoteness and the fact that it is completely covered in ice.

What is an earthquake swarm?

An earthquake swarm translates into a series of shaking seismic events that occur in a relatively smaller area on an ongoing basis. It involves frequent mild shocks without a major earthquake.

When did the swarm start and end?

The earthquake swarm began in August 2020. It included one hundred and twenty-eight shocks, most of which were greater than 4.0 on the Richter scale. Intraday dynamometers are more or less the same as the Richter scale readings. In the first period, the recorded number of earthquakes was 3186. The highest magnitude was seen on two days – October 2 and November 6. In the first, the scale reading was measured to be 5.9, and in the second, it was 6.0. The total number of earthquakes, including the initial stage, was 85,000. The swarm ended in late February 2021, and seismic activities ceased soon after. As the researchers recorded, these earthquake swarms are among the most intense natural geological activities in recent times.
