A team of engineers in the Department of Mechanical and Space Engineering at the University of Missouri School of Engineering designed a flexible material that could help buildings withstand the multiple energy waves that pass through them during an earthquake.

According to the researchers, their materials provide an element of flexibility allowing them to stretch as the building is simultaneously rocked forward, backward, and from side to side during the earthquake. Materials work like the plastic wrap, and allow these natural movements, but without compromising the shape or shape of the building. The obvious benefit is to increase structural stability and reduce damage and potential harm to people from falling debris.

The most distinctive component of the material is the mesh type interior design that is able to protect against both types of energy waves – longitudinal and transparent energy waves – that can travel across Earth. In addition to buildings and infrastructure, material applications can also include isolating aircraft and marine ship engines against vibrations that can lead to damage and shorten shelf life.
