Magnitude 3.6 earthquake shakes Mount Vernon

The earthquake was at a depth of about 13.5 km or 8.4 miles and had an epicenter east of Mount Vernon.

mount vernon, WA – A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday morning about 1.6 km east of Mount Vernon, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred early Sunday morning at a depth of about 8.4 miles (13.5 km).

Reports on Twitter indicate that some residents felt the earthquake this morning and woke up.

Numerous reports have also come into the King 5 editing room describing loud shaking and noises of explosions.

There were no immediate reports of the extent of the damage.

In 2021, parts of Skagit County were hit by several earthquakes. The remote Skagit County valley was hit by 17 earthquakes in just over a week. These earthquakes struck near Mount Josephine, about six miles north of Hamilton. Some small earthquakes were recorded under Mount Josephine in 2003, but may not be related to those that occurred in 2021.

The Darrington-Devils fault zone extends east to west between Mount Vernon and Darrington, and forms the northern boundary of the Everett Basin.

Washington residents and visitors have access to an additional earthquake early warning tool already in use in Oregon and California.

MyShake, a mobile app funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), was made available in January to Washington residents and visitors.

MyShake is available for free through the Apple App Store and GooglePlay for Android phones.
