NYCFC Game Recap: NYC scores late, beats San Jose
Funny what the final score 3-0 will do to your short-term memory.
Earlier today in the Bronx, New York City FC scored an empathic victory over the San Jose Earthquakes Western Conference’s punching bag, but only after a frustrating first half in which New York City struggled to create chances against the MLS’ most leaked defense. Team savers came from the bench: Second-half substitutes Maxi Morales and Gabriel Pereira turned a battered and wasted NYCFC side into a ruthless draft of three shots past poor San Jose goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski in the space of 15 minutes – and it could easily have been done. Score more if the spirit of Chris Wondolofsky (who didn’t die) wasn’t floating around the goal lines.
Those of us who think the Cup is half full will say great teams find a way to win even when things are going well: After enduring a rough start to the season, New York Football Club scored more goals than any other team in the Eastern Conference. and has the third-best goal difference in all of the MLS.
Those of us who think the cup is half empty will say that a shady defense was lucky to escape with a clean sheet, and that less efficient teams would penalize the NYCFC for missed opportunities that could have put the game away long before they were called upon. Cavalry to save the day.
Game stats
NYCFC: 23 shots, 9 on target, 54.6% possession, 477 passes, 88% passing accuracy
San Jose Earthquakes: 11 shots, 3 on goal, 45.4% possession, 391 assists, 80.3% passing accuracy
Back line bickering
There are some aspects of the game that don’t count in the stats log and don’t appear in the highlights. Ex: Teammates quarreled after a dirty game that could have left the other side to score.
While it was reassuring to see center back Thiago Martins on the field and Maxime Chanute on the bench after injuries forced Alfredo Morales off his position and put in place a defensive shift in last week’s 5-4 win over Toronto FC, New York City’s line of defense was not. They look quite comfortable when playing together. Martins and right-back Trayvon Gray don’t always act like they’re reading from the same rules of the game, and the two were often yelling and pointing at each other earlier in the day. Body language doesn’t lie.
Sometimes it felt like watching a family after a week of a beach vacation ruined by rain: issues that don’t have to be important, or that need to be addressed and resolved quietly, are broadcast in front of everyone. The NYCFC recorded a close, but it was because San Jose’s attack was as toothless as the New York City defense protecting the box.
Mr. replace
Last year, critics wanted coach Ronnie Della to make more replacements: The New York City Football Faithful wanted him to be proactive and change the games by bringing in players capable of turning early enough to make a difference. Obviously, Della was taking notice on Twitter, as his substitutions today were the chef’s kiss for the right players brought in at the right time.
Simply put, the match changed when Morales and Pereira replaced Nicolas Acevedo and Thiago in the 65th minute. Morales returned after breaking his rib in training over three weeks ago, and even if the aging playmaker isn’t as dynamic as before, his ability to control the rhythm of The game is unparalleled in MLS: he can slow down time and make the other team follow suit, then speed up and catch them with steady feet. It is a pleasure to watch a maestro like Morales in action.
For his part, Pereira has impressed since joining the team in late March. The 20-year-old right winger was able to seamlessly fit into the squad, balancing a heavy attack on players who like to roam on the left. Pereira isn’t flashy, but his quality raises the bar on the field, and his consistency is a huge upgrade over the striped Jesús Medina.
Pereira will probably make it to the starting line-up this season, but you can see why Della uses him exclusively as a game-changing sub-captain: only when the opponent is comfortable fending off attacks from the left and down the middle does Pereira come in front and open a third front on the right, extending His defense that became compact and confusing is the goalkeeper who used to follow Tati Castellanos and Talis Magno on the left.
Eight minutes after his arrival, Keaton Parks scored a goal – his second goal in two games. Four minutes later, Pereira followed suit, curling a ball around three San Jose defenders and the goalkeeper. Pereira has two goals in four games with New York Football Club – he scored two goals in 47 games with Corinthians.
Well done Chris Gloucester
NYCFC’s third goal came from substitute Chris Gloucester, who replaced injured left-back Malte Amundsen in the 56th minute. Gloucester has had some questionable performances this season, but he’s been impressive today. Not only did Cristian Espinosa feature, and neutralize San Jose’s biggest threat, he scored his own goal in the 88th minute, to seal New York City’s win.
It was Gloucester’s first goal in MLS, and it was fantastic: Morales’s fickle substitution in play, a quick first touch that allowed him to fly left, a low shot inside the near post overpowered the goalkeeper you could see hesitating as he expected the ball to be passed to Thales Magno on The other side of the box.
Everything was smiling at the New York City players on the field. Bickering was forgotten, as were the missing seated, Wondo’d Balls. It’s hard to worry after goals like these, or when your glass is half full.
