The United States national youth team called up Charlotte’s under-17 player

Charlotte FC U-17 Academy player Brian Romero has been called up to the U-15 National Youth Team to compete in the UEFA Development Championship. The US Under-17 team will face Italy, Belgium and Portugal in the tournament in Castelo Branco, Portugal from May 1-11.

Coach Gonzalo Cigares called 20 players for the training camp. Players born on or after 1 January 2006 are eligible for this tournament’s age group and the 2022-23 U-17 MYNT tournament, which culminates in the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru. The list includes 18 players born in 2006 and two born in 2007, Lyon midfielder Axel Perez and Houston Dynamo striker Ezequiel Soto.

The team will follow US-specific comprehensive return to play protocols during the event. The federation requires that all staff and players be fully vaccinated in order to attend YNT training camps. Last month, the U-17 MYNT team traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for friendlies against Argentina and Uruguay, losing 1-2 and winning 2-1, respectively. This marks the fourth training camp for the U-17 tournament after the team previously met locally last October and January.

Four players made their U-17 MYNT debuts: goalkeeper Ingo Ismanek, defender Aidan Harangi, midfielder Axel Perez and striker Adrian Wibowo. Seven players appeared in the team’s four training camps.

U-17 MYNT is preparing to return to international competition after the 2021 Concacaf U-17 World Cup and 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup were canceled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The last round of matches for the Under-17 team played their first and only international matches at the UEFA Development Championship in England in February 2020.

Fifteen clubs are represented on the list, including 10 from the Major League Soccer. Most of the players come from San Jose Earthquakes (four), while players have been called up from LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo.
