Vancouver Island epicenter of a crowded earthquake in Canada – Victoria News

Nearly 400 earthquakes shook different regions of Canada last month, but only a few were noticed – at least to humans.

“It’s a very typical month,” said John Cassidy, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada. Cassidy works with the National Earthquake Risk Project based in Victoria.

The west coast of Canada is one of the most seismically active regions, with nearly 80 percent of earthquakes in Canada occurring along the Pacific coast.

As of May 1-2 before the Alberni Valley News goes to press, 22 earthquakes have been recorded, including three in West Tofino and Port Hardy, and another just south of Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island. People felt a 3.6-magnitude earthquake near Mount Vernon, Washington, in the early morning hours of May 1. The earthquake was located 80 kilometers from Victoria and approximately equal distances from Seattle and Vancouver.

“We see 4,000 to 5,000 earthquakes across Canada every year. There are undoubtedly more than that because those are the ones there,” Cassidy said. The earthquakes picked up by seismographs are usually 2.0 to 2.5 or larger.

388 #earthquakes across #Canada during the past month. A typical pattern with about 80% of seismicity at/near the active plate boundary in western Canada. The largest was the M5.3 (off Vancouver Island) and we’ve only felt a little rough this month.

“Almost all of these are small and imperceptible.”

Thirty earthquakes are typically felt across Canada each year, and that number has held steady for the past two decades.

Most earthquakes occur on the West Coast because underground tectonic plates and the sea move and move along active fault lines. Tectonic plates are slabs of solid rock, some larger than a continent, that move slowly and change the Earth’s topography.

In the southwest BC, for example, the Explorer and Juan de Fuca plates “turn” down another plate called the North American Plate. They move somewhere between 2 and 4 centimeters per year, according to Cassidy.

Did you feel the shaking in Northwest #WA and Southwest #BritishColumbia at 4:16 this morning? Many people did, this was a M3.6 earthquake near Mount Vernon – about halfway between Seattle (90 km), Victoria (80 km), and Vancouver (110 km). Another natural event that occurred on Vancouver Island – or perhaps more appropriately – recently is something called episodic tremor and slip. They are similar to ground vibrations, like storms.

More than 6,000 of these events were recorded between March 20 and April 7. They are not felt, and they happen every 14 months or so, according to Cassidy.

This ETS began in September 2021 in southern Vancouver Island and northern Washington state areas, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

Intriguingly, Cassidy says, little is known about the relationship between earthquakes and episodic tremors. “We don’t think there is any link, but it’s something we are still actively working towards,” he said.

Occasional tremors were discovered about 20 years ago here on Vancouver Island. They are found to run along the subduction zone, which follows the coast line and is about 100 km wide. He added that occasional tremors and frequent slips occur in subduction zones around the world.

Only 67 small ETS tremors (imperceptible) in South #Vancouver today – ETS may be about to end! Nearly 6,000 tremors have occurred here since March 20. / 5ayqY0Qqet

Cassidy said the number of earthquakes recorded in April, along with the number of occasional tremors, is a good reminder that we live in a seismically active region, but he said there is nothing out of nature. “Both are typical patterns,” he said.

Cassidy said there are quite a few places that don’t experience earthquakes: one has to go out into the wilds for that. Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as parts of the country under the Canadian Shield (Laurentian Plateau) rarely feel earthquakes because they are the furthest from the movement of tectonic plates.

We feel them most on the West Coast because Vancouver Island is within an earthquake zone.

“Earthquakes happen every day,” he said. Some devastating earthquakes occur “every decade or two”.

Destructive earthquakes, such as the one that struck the Comox Valley in 1946, fade from memory because they don’t happen all the time. “It’s easy to forget these events but they happen and they will happen. It’s good to take advantage of the reminder that we live in an area that has experienced major earthquakes,” Cassidy said.

He said websites such as EmergencyInfoBC or Shakeout BC have information on how to prepare in the event of an earthquake. And he suggested keeping a flashlight and slippers or shoes by the bed, so you have a way to see and protect your feet from debris on the floor after a serious earthquake.

“This is our message, not to be afraid or worry but to be prepared.”

Earthquakes Canada uses information collected by seismologists to help construction companies and emergency managers know what to expect for future events.

“That’s really the point of all the work that we do is to reduce the impact of earthquakes that might happen in the future.”
