The majority of Missouri residents do not have earthquake insurance

St. Lewis, Missouri (KMOV) – The majority of Missouri residents are not protected from earthquakes.

On Friday, April 30, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake shook parts of St. Louis, at Perlis Park at 141 and I-44 in the Valley Park area. To this day, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance says protection from these earthquakes has reached a historic low.

According to the Department of Commerce and Insurance, insurance coverage against earthquakes in the New Madrid fault decreased in 2021. This is down compared to the year 2000, which was 60%.

The April 30 earthquake proved that it could happen at any time. The New Madrid Fault Zone, which is the largest active area in the United States according to the earthquake peak, experiences 200 earthquakes annually.

Experts believe people are holding back because prices have risen to an average of $524, which is an 816% difference compared to 2000. The New Madrid area is known for three major earthquakes of magnitude seven or higher, which can be felt from states as different as Ohio.
