KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara (Antara) – About 93 earthquakes struck Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, from April 29 to May 5, 2022, according to the East Sumba Geophysics Station of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). ).

In a statement released here on Friday, Kosturo Haryatmoko, head of the Eastern Geophysics Station in Sumba, noted that 82 percent of the total events, or 77 earthquakes, had a magnitude less than or equal to three.

Haryatmoko noted that 18 earthquakes had a magnitude of between three and five, or 17.2 percent of the total earthquakes.

Meanwhile, based on depth, the epicenter of 73 earthquakes was less than 60 km, while the epicenter of 16 earthquakes was over 60 km.

The island of Sumba is often rocked by earthquakes, as it borders two tectonic plates: the Indo-Australian plate and the Eurasian plate.

On August 19, 1977, the southern part of the island of Sumba was hit by a tsunami caused by an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale.
