Emerald Isle, North Carolina – A new safety initiative is asking coastal residents and visitors to be mindful of their beach surroundings, monitor ocean conditions, respect flags and lifeguards, and watch for rip currents.

What you need to know before you go, NC is a public awareness and education initiative on beach safety that was started by former Ocean Rescue Supervisor Danny Shell.

In 2019, when two Raleigh-area teens visited Emerald Island for spring break, they died after getting stuck in a rip current. Former Ocean Rescue Supervisor Danny Shell has decided to start a public awareness and education initiative on beach safety to help prevent future drownings.

“I still pull people out of the water from time to time,” Shell said. “If there’s surfing there, the currents especially rip, and people are in it, especially if we’re having a red flag day, maybe I’ll introduce myself, saying ‘Hey, where are you from, having a good time?'” And make them realize what the red flags mean.

Every day, Shell walks six miles along the beach, but the sun and exercise are only part of why he’s there. He watches people who don’t know how to keep themselves safe in the water.

“I wouldn’t have done, in my heart, my due diligence by knowing what I knew from my experiences by not stopping and engaging them in the conversation,” Shell said. “Ninety-nine percent of the people here accept saving lives from the preventable act of drowning. It is preventable.”

Several businesses in the area, including Gaffers Restaurant, are helping Shell promote beach safety.

“It just comes down to awareness and respect,” said Jason Harrell, owner of Gaffers. “It’s all about these two major features. The ocean is very powerful. One bad move can change your life forever.”

They say they want beachgoers to make memories – not become one.

“It’s a commitment, and I’m passionate about it,” Shell said. “And as long as God allows me to keep breathing, I will continue to preach the gospel of making good choices.”

Know Before You Go NC is a nonprofit organization. Shell hopes its Beach Safety Initiative will set an example for small beach towns along the North Carolina coast.
