200 families homeless as a result of the earthquake that hit parts of Khuzdar

Khuzdar/Quetta: At least 80 homes collapsed when a moderate-intensity earthquake rocked Ornaghi district of Khuzdar district on Friday, displacing more than 200 families.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the 5.2-magnitude quake hit the area at 11:55 a.m., with the epicenter near Ornaghi.

Officials said the quake was felt for half a minute, forcing people out of their homes into the open. After the main tremors, the area continued to receive aftershocks at short intervals.

“A vast area of ​​Ornaghi was affected by the earthquake, which destroyed more than 80 houses while large cracks appeared in another 260 houses,” retired Major Elias Kebzai, Khuzdar Deputy Commissioner, told Dawn, adding that most of the destroyed houses were built using mud.

The earthquake also damaged the villages of Nali, Zamri, Parang and Nachkan Sonaro Lathi in the Tahsel valley.

“Fortunately, no casualties were reported as most of the people were busy with their routines outside their homes. Those who were inside left their homes as soon as the tremors started,” said Mr. Kibzai.

More than 200 families were made homeless as their homes were destroyed, he said, adding that shortly after receiving information about the earthquake, relief items including tents, blankets, food and drinking water were sent to those affected by the earthquake.

He pointed out that the rescue and relief teams are facing difficulty in reaching the stricken villages, as they are located in the hilly areas.

“We have sent healthcare teams along with medicines,” the deputy commissioner said, adding that efforts are also underway to provide emergency shelter to the affected families.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizingo expressed his grave concern over the financial losses incurred by the local people due to the earthquake, and directed the local administration and the county disaster management authority to immediately start an effective relief operation in the quake-hit areas.

The Prime Minister said the government stood with the victims at this difficult hour. He directed the immediate provision of tents, blankets and other necessities to residents of the affected homes.
