With all the first votes counted in the Northern Ireland election to the regional assembly, Sinn Féin caused a political earthquake, taking 29 percent of the first vote.

Sinn Fein, who is campaigning for the reunification of southern and northern Ireland, received significantly more first votes cast than his closest rival, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

The party’s strong performance comes as the region grapples with the fallout from the deal Boris Johnson agreed with the European Union, which led to shortages of some products and soaring prices.

Although all the first votes have been counted, the overall result may be different as the second votes continue to be counted, according to the Good Friday Agreement that guarantees proportional representation.

The result adds to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s woes after a poor performance in local elections across England, which saw the Conservative Party lose control of London.

Sinn Fein, whose candidates were evenly split between men and women, said there would be a border ballot in five years similar to that held in Scotland. If successful that would see the two countries reunited, but for such a survey to take place, Sinn Fein would still have to persuade the British government to allow it to proceed.

But for now, Sinn Féin will celebrate being the largest party in Northern Ireland with 29 per cent of the first votes counted in Northern Ireland.
