Labor retained power in Swansea after winning 45 seats in council elections.

It was a loss of three compared to the 2017 elections but it is still a large majority with 75 council seats.

There was a strange jolt in the county’s political veneer but certainly no earthquake as the Tories dropped two seats, finished with seven, the Independents @Swansea kept three, and the Independents added one to end the evening with four.

The Uplands Party enjoyed a clean sweep in the Uplands, taking all four seats even though one of the winners, Alan Jeffrey, remains in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest while campaigning.

The Liberal Democrats did well, taking all five of the Sketei seats and taking 11 seats in total, four more than in 2017.

Swansea has the first member of the Welsh Council for the Greens after Chris Evans was declared the winner of Mays.

One of the main topics of the day was seeing more female counselors and a younger, more diverse demographic.

Border changes

The afternoon was extending into the evening with one last ward, Clydach, to announce. After two recounts, and cynical applause from hard-working counters when Labor finally conceded defeat, it was confirmed that Tory’s Brigitte Rowlands had edged Labor’s Susan Powell by just eight votes to claim the third seat.

Swansea Labor leader Rob Stewart, who continues to serve Morriston, said: “We were very close to the record result we had in the last election. It’s a really strong Labor vote that has been thrown again.”

“We are grateful to the people of Swansea and will continue to deliver what we promised.

“We’re disappointed we lost a couple, but overall, we’re pretty much where we were.”

Claire Stewart, 50, said he felt the boundary changes approved for this election were having a detrimental effect on Labor at New Mumbles, Danvant and Kelay Wings.

Looking ahead, he said Labor was keen to invest up to £10m in Swansea Roads, secure a major tenant for the vacant Debenhams store in the Quadrant Shopping Centre, start work on the new seawall at Mumbles, and roll out community disinfection clients for all 32 suites , is introducing a new sports facility in Bonymaen, has invested up to £30 million in providing private schools and, through a development partner, a new aquarium and mixed-use scheme as part of Copr Bay Phase II.

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Lib-Dems leader, said: “I think we did a reasonably good job – I think we could have done better.

“Big congratulations to the teams that came out and worked hard. Overall, the Liberal Democrats have shown that we will be back.”

Cllr Holley gave a testament to the efforts of the Sketty nominees after their fantastic show. Husband and wife also congratulated Jeff and Mary Jones for getting two of the three Dunvant and Killay seats.

The Liberals also retained the three Cumburla seats. “I think it reinforced the fact that we are there year round as opposed to Labor, which attends election time,” Cllr Holley said.

Disappointed

Swansea’s Conservative leader Lyndon Jones said he was disappointed to lose two council members.

“But in the end with seven, including one in Clyddach, which was always going to be a tough fight, it was a good result for the Welsh Conservatives,” he said.

Claire Jones said he and his colleagues will represent Conservative voters in Swansea over the next five years and present a constructive challenge to Labour.

“On a personal note, I was very pleased to be re-elected as Bishopstone Councilman, and to have received perhaps the largest increase in the vote of any Welsh Conservative in Wales,” he said.

Some candidates said that campaigning in their patch was sloppy and not something they would want to do again; Others cited a more collegial atmosphere between the various parties.

Upplands party leader Peter May said the latter was in his ward.

“The camaraderie between all the candidates was fantastic,” he said. “The staff deserves a big pat on the back for the way they act.”

He said the Highlands was “the best suite in town”. He also thanked the NHS for its life-saving efforts on his colleague Alan Jeffrey, who could not come to savor the sense of victory.

Meanwhile, Leafy Mayals enjoy a new political shade of green after applause from Wales’ Green Green Party’s Cllr Evans for the announcement. It is the first ever green advisor in Swansea.

Cllr Evans thanked voters and said he looks forward to working with all the different parties to advance the green agenda in Swansea.

“Labour has gotten off to an excellent start on green issues – and I hope to take it to another level,” he said.
