Alasdair Cassels was remembered at a memorial service on Saturday.

Hundreds of people gathered to remember Christchurch businessman and community leader Alasdair Cassells at his store.

In the lobby of The Tannery, tenants, family members and dignitaries paid tribute to the 71-year-old giant Saturday night, following his death of prostate cancer on April 16.

Best known as the owner and developer of The Tannery and as founder of Cassels Brewing Company, Cassells has also been praised for being a true city hero.

Deluxe Cinemas owner Jeremy Stewart shared how Cassels became an inspirational mentor who encouraged and supported his entrepreneurial spirit.

He said Cassells believes in giving people a chance.

“What a legacy he left behind.”

As a community leader with strong values, Cassells was also a true family man.

Bridget Taylor, supported by her daughter Mia, speaks at a memorial service for her partner Alasdair Cassells held in Tannery Saturday night.

“It is unbelievable what he has achieved.”

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has spoken about how dedicated a father of five was to reviving the city center after the earthquake.

Passionate about the Avon River, Cassels has also supported environmental projects and has been a committed supporter of the Phillipstown community.

“These things matter. Kindness doesn’t matter. Generosity matters. Reciprocity makes a difference and that’s what we saw at Alisdair. It was the real deal.”

Dalziel also shared the personal connection she shares with Cassels, after he reached out to her when her husband, Rob Davidson, was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Davidson later passed away in August 2020.

“He gave us incredible encouragement, and I am so grateful for that. It speaks volumes about the man.”

I read a letter from former Labor Representative Ruth Dyson describing Castles as a calm, emotional visionary who set very high standards.

“He made Woolston in Colston with The Tannery.”

I also read a letter from Linwood ward board member Jani Johansson, who was unable to attend due to a positive Covid-19 test.

Johansson said Cassells transformed the public stigma around Woolston and changed the once-governed area into one that “will be forever cherished.”

Tenant Maureen Taney said Cassells was a family man whose love for himself and his legacy and storytelling were woven into the fabric of The Tannery.

Christchurch Mayor Leanne Dalziel spoke of Cassells’ commitment to reviving the city after the earthquake.

The owner of HAPA said the shopping district was a vivid reflection of a strong man who had a vision and didn’t let anything stop him from achieving it.

Cassells partner of 47 years, Bridget Taylor has shared some of her legendary boat adventures including sailing into the Mediterranean and back through the Suez Canal with his family.

Born in Northern Ireland, he moved to Wellington at the age of eight. In the 1960s, he moved to Christchurch to study engineering and make the city his home.

He once told a reporter, “Wellington has never been my home…I’ve loved Christchurch from the start.”

Cassells used his engineering knowledge to open Airless Spray Painting, a sign painting and contract sandblasting business that he successfully ran for 25 years.

In 2008, he brought on son Zach and son-in-law Joe Shanks to turn his beer-making hobby into a full-time business, Castles Brewing.

Taylor said his later years were devoted to increasing the volume and sales of the brewery both in New Zealand and abroad and it was still operating until his death.

“We miss him so badly.”

Cassells is survived by his partner Bridget, his son Zach, and his four daughters Madeline, Baby, Zoe and Mia.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
