Whakatane earthquake swarm unrelated to volcanic turbulence

Whakatāne had a shaky start to the week.

A GNS volcanologist said the small-to-moderate earthquake swarm in Whakatane Monday morning was operating as usual in the city.

At 11:30 a.m., Geonet reported 18 earthquakes in the Eastern Bay of Plenty since midnight.

The largest measurement so far was 4.3 and is located 10 km north of Whakatane which was probably felt in Moropara, Opetiki, Rotorua, Tauranga, Te Kaha and Matawi.

It was struck at a depth of 5 km.

Other earthquakes have had a range of 2.6 to 3.7 – which means weak shaking in the Whakatane region.

GNS volcanologist Brad Scott said this type of behavior is not unusual in the region.

“Whakatāne sits on the Taupō fault belt, and there are clusters of earthquakes. But sometimes it can be months without any, and then there can be swarms.”

Having a fair amount of earthquakes, he said, doesn’t mean there are bigger ones looming.

Earthquake swarms – a series of tremors without an obvious main shock – are common in New Zealand, particularly in volcanic areas.

Scott also said the quakes had nothing to do with recent activity at Ruapehu Mountain that showed signs of unrest as crater lake temperatures rose.
