A 6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Taiwan

Taipei: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan Monday afternoon (May 9), according to the US Geological Survey, sending tall buildings swaying and delaying train services.

The marine quake struck shortly before 2.30 pm at a depth of 27 km, according to the US Geological Survey. It was centered about 70 km southwest of Yonakuni, a Japanese island not far from Taiwan.

Taiwan’s meteorological office said the tremor, the fifth this year above 6.0 on the Richter scale, was felt across the island, although there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Met Office said the quake was followed by two tremors of 5.4 and 5.2 within 90 minutes of the first tremor.

Some Taiwanese social media users have posted pictures of their frightened pets comforting or lights flickering in their buildings.

“(My building) was trembling like a pendulum,” actress Ada Ban said in a Facebook post.

The bureau said Taiwan averages two to three tremors of 6.0 or higher a year.

Taiwan’s railways administration said 17 trains were temporarily running at low speed as a precaution after the quake.

“I hope everyone is safe… there may be some aftershocks and please be careful,” New Taipei City Mayor Ho Yue wrote on Facebook.

The Japan Meteorological Agency, which estimated the quake with a magnitude of 6.6, said it could lead to slight fluctuations in sea level, but it did not issue a tsunami warning.

Taiwan and the surrounding region are regularly exposed to earthquakes as they lie near the intersection of two tectonic plates.

In March, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake off Taiwan’s east coast shook buildings and woke people up, injuring one person and injuring a half-built bridge in the east of the island.
