Why have so many earthquakes occurred near Elgin recently?

More than 20 earthquakes have occurred in the same Midlands region since late December.

Kershaw County, South Carolina – Another string of earthquakes has struck near the Richland and Kershaw county border, including one of the largest in recent history that shook thousands of people in their sleep and was felt across the state.

More than 20 earthquakes have occurred in the same Midlands region since late December. The most recent was in the late afternoon of Monday, hours after one had woken people from their sleep.

“I had just fallen asleep and then woke up to a big bang, it sounded like thunder, and it lasted about ten seconds or so.”

Scott White, a professor of geology at the University of South Carolina and director of the South Carolina Seismological Network, said the earthquake’s time and location accounted for so many exposures.

“It happened in the middle of the night, which is a very quiet time,” White said. “It was a very shallow earthquake, and you tend to hear it well.”

White said that after the first earthquake hit the area again on December 27 and the current of vibrations continued, his team decided to install a seismometer in the area.

“We install these machines. They are very sensitive to vibration in the ground, they are based on the same types of accelerometers or accelerators that you might have in your cell phone, except that they are much more sensitive,” White said.

“We try to get it as deep into the ground as we can to bond it better with the hard rock, so it won’t shake like a lot of jelly, like loose sediment during earthquakes,” White said. “So we usually have to go out and dig a hole and put cement in and then put this seismometer in there, and put it in very carefully. And you know, we put in the solar panels, all these things also keep it powered.”

Having this, White says, allows them to continue searching for earthquakes in an effort to understand why this is happening and whether it will continue.

“We don’t look at this whole sequence as an aftershock event, but rather as a whole series of small earthquakes that gradually loosen pressure within the Earth’s crust,” White said. “During this period of time, when sufficient pressure is removed, we will see the end of this chain of events. A continuous seismic sequence does not reflect abnormal seismic behavior. This is a little longer than most, but it could last for several months or maybe a year.”
