Thousands in South Carolina say they felt an earthquake centered near Elgin

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (WSPA) – A 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Elgin early Monday morning, followed by at least four small aftershocks, including one just before midnight and registered 2.9.

This is just another round of earthquakes that have occurred in that area. Since late December 2021, there have been nearly 30 earthquakes in Kershaw County alone.

More than 5,000 people across South Carolina reported feeling a 3.3-magnitude earthquake Monday, according to the USGS website.

Jonas Verwers, who works at Goat Daddy’s Farm and Animal Sanctuary near Elgin, said he felt the earthquake Monday morning at his home. When he got to work at six in the morning, he was shocked by what he saw.

A tree branch fell and destroyed one of the shelters used to house the guard dogs that graze the farm’s goats. All 35 goats and three dogs in the barn where the shelter is located were not harmed.

“We have a long night ahead of us but hopefully we can clear everything up,” Fuwers said. “We hope to have it completely rebuilt in a few days and to be ready to open by Saturday.”

Ferreros said earthquakes in Kershaw County have become a regular occurrence in the past six months.

“That, its size, you can definitely tell the difference,” he said.

This was the first earthquake centered near Elgin or Lugoff he heard and felt in Columbia, said Dr. Scott White, a professor in the University of South Carolina’s School of Earth, Ocean and Environment and director of the South Carolina Seismological Network.

“This is the same earthquake that started from this full sequence in December,” White said.

According to White, a series of low-magnitude earthquakes is not uncommon. Nor should it be considered a precursor to the “big”.

He said there is no clear answer about earthquakes in Kershaw County.

“It is located along a well-known ancient fault system called the East Piedmont Fault Zone,” he said. “It is likely that this is a pre-existing line of weakness where stress in the ground causes fractures and pulsations like this.”
