NASA says the brutal earthquake on Mars is the largest ever

NASA has revealed the largest earthquake ever recorded on another planet – a magnitude 5 earthquake that struck Mars on May 4.

The quake was detected by the space agency using the Mars Insight probe, which is equipped with a highly sensitive seismometer used to study the planet’s interior.

A seismometer can do this by studying “frequent but usually small” marshes on Mars. Mars does not have plate tectonics like Earth, but it does have volcanically active regions that can cause rumbling.

InSight has detected more than 1,300 such claps so far, with some record numbers.

Around August last year, the probe spotted the two largest seismic events to date: a 4.2-magnitude and 4.1-magnitude earthquake. This was the first time it had been recorded on the far side of Mars and was also five times more powerful than the previous largest earthquake.

However, the May 4 earthquake, announced by NASA on Monday night, was designated as a magnitude 5 earthquake, taking the previous record out of the water. It’s close to the strongest earthquake scientists expect to see on Mars during the InSight mission.

On Earth, a magnitude 5 earthquake would be enough to be felt and possibly cause some minor damage according to the Michigan Technological University Seismic Magnitude Scale.

Bruce Banerdt, principal investigator for the InSight mission at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a press release that the InSight team has been waiting for the “mega” since the seismometer was deployed in December 2018.

He said, “This earthquake is sure to provide an unparalleled view of the planet. Scientists will analyze this data to learn new things about Mars for years to come.”

InSight’s seismometer is a circular, dome-shaped instrument placed on the surface of Mars that records the vibrations it detects. These vibrations may be caused by an asteroid impact, landslides, or earthquakes.

As the vibrations travel through inner Mars, they will change depending on the materials they encounter. Using a seismometer, scientists can tell what materials the vibrations passed through before they were recorded.

The seismometer is so sensitive that it has had problems in the past. A seismometer can pick up vibrations caused by gusts of wind which are not particularly useful. Thus, atmospheric conditions may make it difficult to detect real earthquakes. In the winter, the seismometer could not detect any earthquakes at all.

NASA recently extended the InSight lander mission until December 2022, although the probe faces new challenges with its solar panels powering the mission due to dust in the air.
